07FEB10

Another Blizzard has hit Cape May. The Power is out in the entire training center. I believe the companies attending boot camp this season of 2010 are going to win an award for being pioneers of unusual circumstances at Cape May basic training center. We have had little time to prepare for our one and a half mile run this week. Our routine is gradually becoming more regular. The Victor-182 company as a whole has been maturing through these past few events and it makes me feel proud to be a part of it. Today we spent the afternoon shoveling out snow and ice from Cape May employees' houses, just near the base. It was fun and exhilarating! It was dubbed our, "First Coast Guard humanitarian mission." Not many, if any, companies get the opportunity to do that. In fact, our very own company commander--one of three--Petty Officer Hernandez said that a blizzard to the degree of this one has never hit Cape May as far as he could recall. I feel like we have gained much more respect for this process as well as our teachers and company commanders as we have seen them on a more down-to-earth level than most people get the chance to.

The overtones of Victor-182 company appear to be shaping into a new appearance. Things through the glass seem to be sharpening into some kind of cohesive form. Perhaps this could be a foreshadowing of what is to come. We are beginning to meet time objectives, people are now more willing to sacrifice their personal behalf towards accomplishing the group task, and our cleanliness has increased in manifold ways. It is probably just a step forward in fulfilling the course of being a company at Cape May. As this figure starts to reveal itself and we evolve as a company, we will become a fortified unit.

This is Victor-182.

31JAN10

Two of the main objectives for a Coast Guard company to strive towards are strength and solidarity. Strength is gained through discipline and solidarity through a collective identity. Victor-182 is currently going through a discipline and identity crisis in mid week two.

Victor-182 has been consistently failing many objectives. Our identity is perceived as being sloppy, careless and boneheaded. Some would say it smells like a frat house. However, this does not mean we don’t have strong individuals, intelligent people and a well rounded, diverse company. We are beginning to march well, comradery is starting to surface and we are adapting to the military lifestyle. We will see if it is more than just a storm.

It is snowing today. The company spent most of the time cleaning up squad bays and the quarterdeck. There were three people who had never seen snow before and they got to do the shoveling. I believe we, as a company, are finding more assurance, more hope and more strength as the days progress. We make mistakes quite often, but there is a key detail to this that is refining us individually. That is appreciation. For those of us who have never had to count change to full up the gas tank or cut down on meals to save money, etc., we are being awakened. The small pleasure in life are wondrous to us, as they should be to all who go not have to go without and even those who do. Simply because when we assume we have little, we are rich with teamwork, friendship and joy.

Here in boot camp where stress is the main factor, we can be thankful for our opportunities. We will endure the temporary burdens because we appreciate the chance to choose.

This is Victor-182.
