The last week of training has finally arrived for Romeo-182. Graduation is near and Romeo spent this past week getting some of the final requirements finished. On Monday, we spent all day learning first aid and C.P.R.. The company learned how to stabilize serious wounds and fractures. We were all put in mock situations and had to treat the injuries with speed and precision. The second part of the class dealt with C.P.R. and choking. Romeo learned all the steps in trying to save someone's life. Each person could be seen giving rescue breaths and compressions on the plastic dummies. Everyone took it very serious and did great. The following day, Romeo took their seamanship class final which was cumulative. The company did very well and the test averages were high enough to qualify for the seamanship pennant which is now flying next to our company flag. It is a pennant that we are proud to have flying. Romeo also got in the freezing cold to learn line handling skills. We learned how to handle all types of line and practiced yelling certain commands when using them. The big day we were waiting for this week was the close order drill test. This test was based on all aspects of our marching skills. It was very important for us because we have been practicing since day one for this and we needed to pass it to have our off-base liberty on the following day. Our Section Commander, Chief Bou, was our grader and we knew he meant business. After it was all said and done, everyone knew before Chief Bou even told us that we had not shown anything that was worth a good score. Different factors were involved, but nerves also got the best of us. Chief Bou gave us a 6 out of 10 and it was a score we fairly deserved. 6 is passing so Romeo had their off-base liberty granted for Saturday, but you could see the frustration after weeks of practicing. After some time, we all agreed that we needed to look ahead and not dwell on this anymore. The next day we all got in our tropical blue uniforms and got ready for off-base liberty. The winds were blowing extremely hard as we walked to the front gate of the base. We all got in groups and took off in taxis to enjoy what the area had to offer. We ate at restaurants, went to the movies, and did some shopping. It turned out to be a really fun day hanging out with all of our shipmates. As our final days approach, it is hard not to see the positive changes in all of us. We can all remember that first night. The fear, confusion, and the unknown. These were challenges for most of us that we were able to overcome with teamwork and support. There is no doubt we will take everything our Company Commanders and instructors have taught us and use it to build ourselves into Guardians. So we thank Petty Officer Wagner, Petty Officer Harmon, and Petty Officer Kruger for all of their time and devotion to Romeo-182.

Romeo is now in its last few weeks of training and things are getting done fast. Now that we all know where our first units are going to be, we are doing everything we can to show up prepared and organized. The week started with two firefighting classes that taught us about firefighting techniques and equipment. Romeo was given a time limit to suit up in full firefighting gear which included air tanks, masks, gloves, and special boots. After we quickly put our gear on, we rushed into the firefighting room where all the characteristics of a real fire were in full effect. We approached in small groups, low to the ground, and began to spray the fire down with the different hose techniques that were taught to us. Afterwards, we all had some adrenaline running through us and took the time to realize how prepared we have to be for these kinds of emergencies out at sea. Romeo also had their travel arrangements completed this week. The destinations and the travel time required are different for many of us. A few of us are going right back to our hometowns, while others are going overseas. The whole process has been quick and on point, saving Romeo any extra hassles. Christmas was the most anticipated day of the week. Although we missed our families and friends, the local families of Cape May took us all in with open arms. The whole event was called Operation Fireside. We waited patiently in the chapel as excited families picked us up and took us to their homes. Romeo ate dinner, made phone calls, and spent a few hours sharing stories with our hosts. The company came back with different stories of amazing food and kind people. We were all very grateful that these families decided to spend their holidays cheering us up and making us feel at home. The week ended with on-base liberty for Romeo. We made use of the time off to make more phone calls, purchase some needed supplies, go online to check our units, and spend time with our fellow shipmates. Romeo-182 is entering the seventh week and graduation is near. We must continue to always maintain self-discipline and uphold the values that will make us Guardians.

Week 05

This past week was very busy and extremely exciting for Romeo-182. The week started off with the company facing off in pugil stick matches. We suited up in protective gear and proceeded to hit our opponents with certain moves to gain points. Everyone was swinging and blasting their opponents with everything they had in them. It was really fun for all of us because it gave us a chance to release some aggression and cheer our fellow shipmates on. We are all looking forward to doing it again in week six. Our physical training also continues with weight-lifting and cycling workouts. Many of us have seen a positive physical change in our bodies and are using that as motivation to continue trying harder.

Our seamanship mid-term was this week and it tested us on a wide array of knowledge which included vessel terminology, knots, aircrafts, and the different duties that keep the fleet going. Most of Romeo-182 did extremely well on it.

The most exciting part of this week was receiving our colors and our orders to our first units. Receiving our colors signifies that we have a achieved a level of teamwork and discipline worthy of having that company flag with us at all times. Romeo knows that to keep our colors we need to continue with the teamwork and improve in all areas. After we received our colors we were all feeling really good about accomplishing that goal and then we received another surprise. We were told that our orders to our first units had come in. One by one, we anxiously waited to find out where we were going to be in three weeks. The diverse unit locations were all over the country and overseas. We received orders to all types of units which included cutters, small boat stations, buoy tenders, air stations, and loran stations. Some of us on cutters will also even get to see different parts of the world like Asia and the South Pacific. Those that are not excited about the orders they may have received are encouraged to go there with open minds and make the best of it. Many times they will turn out to be the units that they will enjoy the most.

The snow is also coming down pretty good here in Cape May, NJ. Many recruits experienced their first snowfall with blasting winds and icy conditions. As Christmas day approaches us, our friends and families will be with all of us in our thoughts. Romeo-182 will continue to prepare for the beginning of a new future and we will put our hearts into our training to be ready for our first units.

Romeo-182, full of motivation and commitment was able to complete one of the most important weeks in training. The week started with the company going to the shooting range and learning how to fire a .40 caliber handgun. Many of us had never shot a gun before, but with a few helpful tips from the Gunners Mates we were hitting the targets and following all of the safety regulations. The good shooters also qualified to use the .40 caliber handgun when they get to their first units if their job requires it. A few hours of shooting left the company excited and looking forward to the remaining week. The company then had the physical fitness tests which consisted of pushups, sit-ups, and running a mile and a half. It was not easy for everybody, but we knew the importance of this test and did not back down. We were also able to run outside in beautiful mild weather, rare for the month of December in New Jersey. The most anticipated class this week involved filling out our “dream sheets.” All of Romeo-182 filled out papers stating exactly where they would like to be stationed. If there is a spot open and you qualify to fill that spot then there is a chance you may get it. Everything is based on the needs of the service. All of us are waiting and wondering what the future holds for us. Romeo knows that no matter where we end up, we are going to make the best of the experience and walk away with valuable life lessons. The week finished up with our mid-term that tested us on material we have been learning since day one. Romeo-182 is now half way through training and still pushing to become the best company we be. Honor, respect, and devotion to duty are the qualities we are developing and looking to carry forward with us.

This week Romeo-182 started its weight training and cycle classes. All of us are trying our hardest to prepare for our physical exams coming up next week. We were also able to meet our company mentor, Senior Chief Engle, who was kind enough to come in and speak to the company for two hours. He answered all the questions the company had regarding all aspects of the Coast Guard. We were also given an introduction to some of the survival gear we will be using while in the Coast Guard. The company was excited to jump in the pool and learn how to use the survival suits. An exciting class that Romeo-182 has also started is the seamanship class. We are learning things that we will be taking with us to our first unit. We have also been doing a lot of marching and the company is working together to perfect every aspect of it. This coming week Romeo-182 heads to the shooting range to learn about firearms and the safety involved with it. We are continuing to learn how to work better as a team and are learning from each other.

Formation and the first training week.

On a Tuesday evening, recruits from all parts of the nation flew to Philadelphia Airport and got on a bus with no idea of what to expect. Most of us were nervous and anxious as we entered the town of Cape May, NJ. As we passed through the gates to the base, the bus stopped and everything went silent. A couple of minutes later we were introduced to the Company Commanders. This was our first wakeup call that for the next two months, every single person was going to have to focus, listen, and move fast. That night was the birth of Company Romeo-182. The first few days were spent preparing for our first day of training. Stress levels were high as we were all expected to adapt quickly and get ready to take on new challenges. The first week of training we were introduced to our weekly gym workouts. The company also took its swim test to make sure our bodies are fit for any situation that Mother Nature might throw at us. Romeo-182 also spent Thanksgiving away from familiar friends and family, but the galley took time from their holiday to prepare us a delicious turkey dinner. Our classes are also helping transform us into the honorable men and women we all want to be. This is done through the Instructors and Company Commanders that have many years of dedicated service in the Coast Guard. As Romeo-182 heads into the following week, teamwork and discipline will need to improve in order for our goals to be met.
